When Garlands were ready with another batch of songs, Andy Chase had just finished building Stratosphere Sound. The band went into the brand new studio on the last day of summer and emerged on New Year’s Day with their first full-length record. For their most ambitious work to date, Garlands asked old friend Gary Maurer to take the reigns as producer and engineer. In addition to past efforts with Garlands, his impressive recording credits include work with Luna, Fountains of Wayne, and his own, acclaimed band Hem. Maurer’s old-school production aesthetic was the perfect complement to the music, creating a gauzy dream world where even the fast songs feel mellow. Over a foundation of interweaving hollow-body guitars and elastically melodic bass, swooning vocals bear indecently crooned propositions, while tasteful drums ebb and flow with organic and precise sensitivity to the needs of the song – from taut and edgy to casual and relaxed. The album also sees the band subtly augmenting its signature arrangements with the warm, classic sounds of Moog and Juno synths, Rhodes pianos, and Farfisa organs, as well as sampled drum loops and sequencers.

The final result is the subdued, elegant ache of Bedroom Music. From the S.O.S. opening guitar figure of the impossibly laid-back Four Fingers to the relentless crescendo of Romance, this record is a shimmering collection of bedroom pop masterpieces. Take a chance and let Garlands reconnect you with the New York of the Velvet Underground, a deep blue Rothko, a late-night black coffee. Unknown pleasures are not necessarily dangerous – Garlands love you, and are well worth the risk.

Merci Déhà for the download code. Lots of bands use these ingredients – pretty female vocals over doomy guitars always sounds good, but usually that's where the ideas run out. That isn't the case here. Each song is packed with ideas and evolutions, genres and references it's boring to list but not at all to listen to. A pleasure to have been introduced to this. Luke
